Rhetorical Analysis: TV Commercial
"Should a phone be pretty? Should it be a tiara-wearing, digitally-clueless beauty pageant queen? Or should it be fast? Racehorse-duct-taped-to-a-scud-missile fast? We say the latter. So we built a phone that does. Does rip through the web like a circular saw through a ripe banana. Is it a precious, porcelain figurine of a phone? In truth: no. Its not a princess. It's a robot. A phone that trades hair-do for can-do."
1. ARGUMENT/ENTHYMEME – If you own a Droid phone you will be seen as a person of the future because the speed of the Droid phone is faster than any phone out there. **The enthymeme is iffy, I know. It was hard for me to find a good one... But I'm pretty sure I grasped the rest of the assignment pretty well.**
2. AUDIENCE - I feel that this commercial could attract audiences of all kinds - everyone has a phone these days. However, it does narrow the audience down to those that want or need a faster, more hi-tech phone, and all the explosions will draw in the men. Also, men typically are more tech-savvy then the women.
3. GOAL - The goal is to get those that see this commercial to know what is really important about a phone: what it does and how quickly. Not what it looks like. Also, by showing that Verizon/Google Droid can now compete with the AT&T/Apple iPhone, they are hoping to get people to change to the Verizon network.
4. HOW THE ARGUMENT IS MADE -
- Ethos (authority): The two companies that came together to make and promote this phone are Verizon and Google. Google is always releasing great new programs and websites online. Verizon is constantly advertising itself as America's most reliable network. Those two companies coming together means that this phone is not only reliable, but that its new, top-of-the-line, and of great quality.
- Pathos (emotional): The main form of emotional appeal that this commercial has is that of name-calling and pointing out the flaws of the iPhone and in a round-about way, calling it “girly”. This commercial is drastically different from an iPhone commercial: It feels like a Bourne/Bond movie. There are explosions everywhere and it gets your heart going. This commercial says that it can give you excitement in your life - and fast.
- Logos (logical): Beauty queens have been around for forever and all look, think and act the same. Robots, however, are a thing of the future and they do what you want to: you control them. The Droid phone is the closest thing to compare to an iPhone. This commercial points out the flaws of the iPhone and shows that whatever the iPhone can't do, the Droid can do.
5. IS THE ADVERTISEMENT EFFECTIVE - I feel that this argument is effective. the iPhone and Apple have some pretty religious followers, but I feel that those in charge of the advertising for the Droid took the bold stance that is needed to debunk the iPhone. By creating a phone that is equally matched to to iPhone, people will begin to see the cons of “perfect” iPhone. People can now have a phone that is just as good as the iPhone, but don't have to switch to the AT&T network.
